Desert
Storm
Symbolism in the Desert Storm monument reflects the Gulf War and culture
- The massive monolith
is like a "desert shield" stuck in the sand even as the men
and women took a firm stand during Desert Shield
- The crescent moon
represents Islam and the "pincer movement"
- The earth tones
represent desert rock and camouflage
This
monument won first place in The American Institute of Commemorative Art
Design Contest. Two monuments were created. One is in Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina, and the other is in Florence, South Carolina.
Holocaust
Memorial
The
four corner posts symbolize guard towers
- The chain represents
the barbed wire of the concentration camps
- The monolith appears
to be rising from the ashes (rocks) symbolizing Israel's rise into a
powerful nation despite persecution
- The Star of David
represents Judaism
- The carved tablets
symbolize the Ten Commandments
- The barbed wire
carvings following each line are a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust
Lit both day and night
the memorial stands as a constant reminder of the Holocaust so that these
horrors may never be repeated! It is located at Temple Beth Israel, Florence,
South Carolina.
